The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has raised India’s growth projection to 6.6% for 2025 — an upward revision of 0.2 percentage points — citing strong reform momentum, infrastructure investment, and digital transformation as key drivers of sustained economic growth.
At a press conference during the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva lauded India for implementing “very significant reforms,” describing the country as a major contributor to global growth.
“India is one of the fastest-growing economies, and given its size, it contributes substantially to global growth,” Georgieva said.
“It is where it is today because it has pursued significant reforms — from tax reform to investments in infrastructure and digital connectivity — that have unlocked growth potential.”

In its latest World Economic Outlook, the IMF noted that India’s robust first-quarter performance in 2025 has more than offset the impact of recent U.S. tariff increases on Indian imports.
“In India, growth is projected at 6.6% for 2025, an upward revision from the July forecast,” the report stated. “A strong first quarter carried forward, offsetting the effects of the U.S. tariff increase since July.”
India’s economy expanded by a remarkable 7.8% in the April–July quarter, surpassing global expectations and reinforcing its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Georgieva credited India’s structural reforms in taxation, infrastructure, and digital governance for driving broad-based, inclusive growth.
She highlighted the government’s achievements in:

- Digital transformation initiatives, such as Aadhaar (digital ID) and UPI (digital payments), which have revolutionized financial inclusion.
“I’m very big on India because of the boldness with which it does things others said were not possible,” Georgieva remarked. “For example, digital identity — everyone said you can’t give a digital ID to everyone, but India has proven them wrong.”

While praising India’s reform trajectory, the IMF Chief encouraged New Delhi to further liberalize trade and pursue stronger global integration.
“India has maintained some trade barriers and tariffs,” Georgieva said. “It is important to think about the direction — whether to increase restrictions or integrate further. From relations with the EU, the signal seems to be: yes, India wants to trade with others.”
She also urged India to continue doing what has worked — deepening reforms and enhancing competitiveness.
