BJP Minister Says No Ban on Beef: Goa Tells Tourists to “Eat, Pray, and Enjoy”

Panaji, October 18, 2025:
Goa’s Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has firmly dismissed speculation about any potential beef ban in the state, assuring both tourists and residents that Goa’s inclusive culinary culture will remain untouched, even as the government promotes the state as a spiritual tourism destination.

Speaking to the media, Khaunte reaffirmed that Goa’s diversity, hospitality, and freedom of choice are central to its identity — values that will not be compromised in the pursuit of new tourism goals.

“We live in the form of communal harmony. Whether it is Diwali, Chaturthi, or Christmas, we visit each other’s homes and enjoy each other’s cuisine the way we want,” Khaunte said, addressing questions about potential restrictions under the “Dakshin Ka Kashi” initiative.

🌴 “Eat What You Want and Enjoy”: The Minister’s Message

Responding to concerns that the state’s push toward spiritual tourism could lead to dietary restrictions, the minister was categorical: there will be no curbs on food choices.

“A tourist who comes to Goa has various options to choose, taste, and eat — there is no ban on anything. We respect that.
I don’t want to make anyone eat compulsorily.
That’s why I say, ‘Apko jo khana hai, khao aur maza karo’ — eat what you want and enjoy,” Khaunte declared.

His remarks underscore Goa’s longstanding “Atithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God) philosophy, emphasizing that tourism in Goa will continue to reflect freedom, respect, and inclusivity.

🕉️ Balancing Spiritual and Secular Tourism

The government’s “Dakshin Ka Kashi” initiative aims to position Goa as a hub for spiritual and wellness tourism, leveraging its rich temple heritage alongside its world-famous beaches.

However, the minister clarified that spiritual tourism is not synonymous with restriction or moral policing.

“Our effort is to offer choices — not impose them,” he noted. “We respect every community’s sentiments. Such thoughts don’t come to any place unless the media puts them there.”

Khaunte’s comments aim to dispel misinformation and ensure domestic and international travelers that Goa’s pluralistic ethos — where religion, cuisine, and culture coexist seamlessly — remains intact.

🍛 Culinary Freedom & Tourism Confidence

Goa’s food scene — a vibrant mix of Portuguese, Konkani, Catholic, Hindu, and global influences — is one of its strongest tourism draws. From seafood thalis and prawn balchão to sorpotel and cafreal, the coastal state’s culinary diversity symbolizes its harmonious coexistence of faiths and traditions.

Industry experts say the government’s assurance will help reinforce global confidence in Goa’s tourism brand, especially among foreign travelers and domestic food enthusiasts.

“Freedom of food is freedom of culture — and Goa has always celebrated both,” a local restaurateur said.

🧭 Goa’s Tourism Outlook

As the state gears up for the upcoming festive and winter seasons, the tourism department is also focusing on:

  • Spiritual & heritage circuits (temple routes, yoga retreats)
  • Cultural festivals celebrating Goan art, music, and cuisine
  • Sustainability and eco-tourism initiatives to preserve the state’s natural beauty

Khaunte concluded by reaffirming Goa’s guiding hospitality ethos:

“Eat, pray, and enjoy — and take back good memories. That’s the essence of Goa.”
