Duma: Sheikh Mohammed Unveils Dubai’s Floating Museum of Modern Art

Dubai, UAE — Another breathtaking landmark is set to rise — and float — in Dubai. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced the launch of the Dubai Arts Museum (Duma) — a spectacular new cultural destination to be built on an island in the heart of Dubai Creek.

Designed by legendary Japanese architect Tadao Ando, Duma is envisioned as a floating museum over water, positioning Dubai as “the capital of modern art and a global destination for creativity.”

“Duma reflects Dubai’s civilisation and spirit, serving as a mirror to its culture and arts,” Sheikh Mohammed said on X (formerly Twitter). “The museum will add a new diversity to Dubai’s landmarks and canvas of architectural beauty.”

🐚 An Architectural Marvel Inspired by Nature

Duma’s design is a masterpiece of minimalism and symbolism, inspired by water, sky, wind, and light. The structure itself is an artwork — shaped to evoke a shell and a pearl, paying homage to Dubai’s pearl-diving heritage, which laid the foundation for its economic and cultural legacy.

Architect Tadao Ando, known globally for works like the Church of Light and Chichu Art Museum, brings his signature blend of concrete, geometry, and natural harmony to Duma. The museum will seamlessly merge contemporary architecture with Dubai’s rich maritime history.

🎨 A Global Destination for Modern Art

More than just a museum, Duma is designed to be a cultural hub and creative ecosystem. The five-storey structure will feature:

  • Exhibition halls showcasing both global masters and emerging artists
  • A library and learning center dedicated to art education and research
  • Cafés and restaurants overlooking Dubai Creek
  • Open artistic spaces for workshops, installations, and interactive performances

Each level will blend art with architecture — inviting visitors to experience creativity through both physical and emotional space.

🏙️ A Collaboration of Vision and Community

Sheikh Mohammed expressed his gratitude to Emirati businessman Abdullah Al Futtaim and his son Omar Al Futtaim, who are partnering in the museum’s development.

“This project is a model of the private sector’s commitment to the city that nurtures it,” Sheikh Mohammed said. “Cities defined by arts and culture flourish through strong economies and achieve harmony and sustainability when the private sector acts responsibly in collaboration with the public sector. This is what we see in Dubai.”

Duma represents not only a cultural milestone but also a vision of how art, architecture, and civic spirit can shape the identity of a modern city.

🏛️ Dubai’s Evolving Cultural Skyline

With the launch of Duma, Dubai continues its remarkable journey of blending tradition, technology, and creativity. The city already boasts an impressive lineup of architectural icons that celebrate innovation and culture:

  • Burj Khalifa: The world’s tallest tower and Dubai’s most recognized landmark.
  • Burj Al Arab: A symbol of modern luxury inspired by the sail of a ship.
  • Dubai Frame: The world’s largest frame, bridging the old and new faces of the city.
  • Mohammed bin Rashid Library: Designed like an open book, home to over a million titles.
  • Museum of the Future: The world’s most beautiful building, celebrating science and sustainability.

Now, Duma joins this constellation of landmarks — as a beacon of art, architecture, and innovation floating over the waters that once shaped Dubai’s story.

🌍 A New Cultural Era for Dubai

With Duma, Dubai reinforces its commitment to becoming a global capital of culture and creativity — a space where art meets ambition and where the past and future flow together like the waters beneath its foundations.
