Texas Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Indian Student at Fort Worth Gas Station

A 23-year-old man from Texas has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Indian student Chandrashekar Pole, 28, at a gas station in Fort Worth on the night of October 3. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Indian-American community, already grappling with a rise in attacks on students and workers across the United States.

🔫 Suspect Identified, Arrested After Shooting Spree

The suspect, identified as Richard Florez, a resident of North Richland Hills, allegedly shot Chandrashekar Pole while the latter was working a part-time shift at a gas station on Eastchase Parkway, police confirmed.

After the shooting, Florez reportedly fired at another vehicle about a mile away, though no one was injured. He then crashed into a gate while attempting to enter a nearby residence on Meadowbrook Drive, where officers arrested him shortly after and recovered a firearm from his vehicle.

“The suspect is currently in the hospital but has been booked for homicide,” said Officer Brad Perez, spokesperson for Fort Worth Police, as quoted by NBCDFW.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office later confirmed Chandrashekar’s identity and reported that he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said that while the investigation is ongoing, the motive behind the attack remains unclear.

🕊️ Victim: A Promising Indian Student and Recent Graduate

According to family members, Chandrashekar Pole, who hailed from Hyderabad, India, had moved to the United States two years ago to pursue higher education.

He completed a Master’s in Data Analytics from the University of North Texas, Denton, just six months ago after earning a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree in Hyderabad.

“He had just finished his degree and was looking for a job. He was working part-time at the gas station to support himself,” his brother Damodar told reporters in India.

🇮🇳 Indian Consulate Assists in Repatriation

The Consulate General of India in Houston has confirmed that it is in close contact with Chandrashekar’s family to facilitate the repatriation of his remains to India.

A GoFundMe campaign has also been launched by community members to cover repatriation expenses and assist the grieving family.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian national Chandrashekar Pole and are extending all possible support to his family,” the Consulate said in a statement.

💔 Community in Shock: Growing Concerns Over Student Safety

The Indian-American community in Texas expressed deep sorrow and concern following the killing, noting a troubling rise in violent incidents involving Indian students in recent months.

Many have called for stronger safety measures for international students working late-night jobs, especially in isolated or high-risk environments such as gas stations and convenience stores.

“Our community is heartbroken. Students come here with dreams — no family should have to endure this,” said a community volunteer from the Telangana Association of North America (TANA).

📉 A Disturbing Pattern of Violence

Chandrashekar’s death follows several other tragic cases involving Indian nationals in the U.S.:

  • In January 2025, a 26-year-old student from Telangana was shot dead in Connecticut.
  • Another man from Ranga Reddy district was found dead with bullet wounds the same month.
  • In September, a 30-year-old from Mahabubnagar died in California after being shot by police during a domestic altercation.

These incidents have reignited discussions on the vulnerability of international students and the urgent need for safety protocols in U.S. workplaces and campuses.

🙏 A Life Cut Short

As the investigation continues, friends, classmates, and members of the Indian diaspora are remembering Chandrashekar as a bright, humble, and hardworking student who dreamed of building a better life abroad.

His tragic death has become another painful reminder of the risks faced by young immigrants balancing studies, work, and survival far from home.
