Migrants moving to the United Kingdom will soon face stricter English language requirements, with new rules mandating a higher level of proficiency for visa applicants from January 8, 2026.
Under the new regulation, some graduates and skilled worker visa applicants — including those applying under the Scale-Up Visa route for fast-growing companies — will need to demonstrate English at an A-level standard (B2 level) instead of the current GCSE-level (B1) requirement.

According to Home Office estimates, the higher English proficiency rule could reduce migration by up to 100,000 people per year.
The reform comes as net migration to the UK fell to 431,000 in 2024, down sharply from 906,000 in 2023.
Officials believe the change will make UK work and study routes more selective, aligning immigration policy with the country’s labour market needs.

Not everyone agrees with the new requirement.
Afsana Akhtar, an immigration lawyer, criticised the policy as “unfair,” arguing it could exclude skilled workers who meet all other qualifications but come from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
“This move risks discouraging talent that contributes to key industries — from healthcare to technology,” she said.
Meanwhile, Home Office Minister Mike Tapp confirmed that further visa and language reforms are expected in the coming months as part of the government’s continued efforts to tighten migration policy.
